Unlike modelled instruction or independent practice, there isn’t a script to follow. Every lesson is different because every group of students responds differently.
One class may be ready to move on after a single example.
Another may need several opportunities, additional questioning or further clarification before they’re ready for independent practice.
That’s what makes guided practice such a sophisticated teaching skill.
It requires teachers to constantly observe, respond and make instructional decisions in real time.
The good news is that guided practice isn’t something you’re either naturally good at or not.
Like questioning, modelling and checking for understanding, it’s an instructional skill that becomes stronger with deliberate practice.
