Independent practice is the point in an explicit teaching lesson where students have the opportunity to independently apply what they have learnt.
It follows modelled instruction and guided practice, but moving students into the “You Do” is about more than simply giving them a task and asking them to get started.
This phase matters because students need the opportunity to practise the knowledge or skill without the same level of teacher support.
And for teachers, it creates an opportunity to step back from whole-class instruction and respond to what students need during the practice.
