Hi, I’m Trudy 👋
When I first started working in explicit teaching, I quickly realised that the traditional resources I had were not enough. I spent countless hours reshaping and refining my lesson plans to ensure they aligned with the structured approach required for explicit instruction.
As a curriculum writer for many years, I’ve created over 500 explicit instruction lessons, refining my approach to make lessons clear and impactful. 🌟 Now, I’m thrilled to share this experience with you through this platform.
My Journey in Explicit Teaching
I wanted to share a little bit about my own journey in explicit teaching—a journey that has been filled with both challenges and breakthroughs.
In my very first year of teaching (in 2015), I had the privilege to train under John Hollingsworth, with my lessons observed and coached by Sylvia Ybarra.🌟 This incredible training sparked my passion, but I quickly ran into a common issue: there simply weren't enough quality, ready-made resources for explicit teaching.
I found myself building materials from scratch to meet the needs of my students. The results? Students who were not just following along but genuinely engaged, empowered, and set up for success. 🙌
Then, while on maternity leave, I transitioned into a role as a curriculum writer — a position that grew into more than five years of experience and over 500 explicit instruction lessons created. This allowed me to refine my expertise in lesson planning and design even further. Producing explicit teaching lessons at scale meant I received daily feedback on structure and effectiveness, while collaborating with thought leaders and experts in the field broadened my perspective.
Through this work, I noticed a troubling trend: many resources were overcomplicated, filled with excessive animations and content-heavy slides that distracted from, rather than supported, the learning.
So, I decided to make a change.
